Across a career that included more than six decades of work for Vogue, Irving Penn examined the conventions of beauty and representation through an extraordinary range of photographic subjects. Moving between commercial assignments and independent work, he developed a practice defined by rigorous attention to form and a sustained investigation of the expressive possibilities of the medium. His fashion photographs emphasized the architectural qualities of couture, while his studies of the nude challenged traditional ideals of the human figure. In portraiture, his carefully controlled settings isolated sitters from their surroundings, directing attention to their individuality and physical presence. Irving Penn: The Measure of Beauty brings together four photographs from distinct bodies of work to examine the different expressions of beauty across Penn's photographic practice. From the carefully constructed aesthetics of his photography for Vogue and the sculptural forms of haute couture to his studies of the human figure and portraits of Moroccan sitters, the exhibition explores the breadth of Penn's artistic vision and the formal precision that defined his work.
