Arthur Elgort

Arthur Elgort (born 1940, New York City) is a photographer whose naturalistic, movement-driven approach to fashion photography fundamentally changed the aesthetics of the genre and helped define its visual language from the 1970s onward. Rejecting the static poses and heavily controlled setups that dominated fashion photography in the preceding decades, Elgort brought a documentary sensibility and an eye for spontaneous movement to his work, producing images in which models appeared genuinely alive, in motion, and at ease in the world.

A longtime contributor to American Vogue and other leading publications, Elgort photographed many of the defining fashion stories and portraits of the late twentieth century, working with a wide range of models, designers, and cultural figures across decades of sustained output. His background in the visual arts, combined with a deep love of jazz and ballet, shaped the rhythmic, kinetic quality of his photographs, which feel less like fashion documents than glimpses of real life caught at an extraordinarily elegant moment.

His work is held in significant private and institutional collections internationally and continues to exert a strong influence on contemporary fashion and editorial photography.
